Our Response and the Compassionate Care Fund
In Lewiston, everyone can recount where they were on October 25, 2023 as news of the deadliest mass casualty incident in the state captivated everyone’s attention, concern and sadness. CMMC received the call, and in 42 minutes had 14 critically injured patients in our Emergency Department.
We were ready. We had the right expertise and we had run the right drills. Within minutes, word went out and surgeons, nurses and team members from every sector of our health system heeded the call. We saved 13 of the 14 injured patients that night. After a deep collective breath, we got up the next morning to take care of our patients and begin our own healing.
As the dedicated trauma center for central Maine, in the days following the Lewiston tragedy, we established the Compassionate Care Fund for Trauma Response and Support. The fund supports patients, caregivers and the community including trauma care for patients without the ability to pay, training and education for hospital team members, investments in trauma facilities and securing adequate supplies dedicated to responding to mass casualty incidents.
