Home Residency Programs and Fellowship Lewiston Program Wilderness and International Medicine Program Curriculum

Curriculum

The curriculum of the Wilderness Medicine Track offered through the Family Medicine Residency is designed to create medical experts in wilderness clinical care, research and education. Graduates of the program will also be qualified to serve as advisors to outdoor education groups and search and rescue teams.

WMT Year One

  • Complete Outdoor Emergency Care course
  • Complete Helicopter Safety Training course
  • Complete a minimum of 2 LifeFlight Observer flights
  • Complete Wilderness Advanced Life Support (WALS) course

WMT Years Two and Three

  • Complete Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course
  • Complete Ground Search/NASAR Technician course
  • Attend at least 1 wilderness medicine CME conference
  • Teach at least 1 community wilderness medicine class (minimum 4 hours teaching time)
  • Complete at least 1 month wilderness medicine elective
  • Present a wilderness medicine topic at CMMC Grand Rounds
  • Publish at least 2 wilderness medicine articles or poster presentations

Longitudinal

  • Review the personal Learning Contract with the WMT Faculty Mentor biannually
  • Maintain Wilderness Medical Society annual membership
  • Organize CMMC FPR Wilderness Medicine Interest Group
  • Assist with teaching OEC and WALS courses
  • Organize 1 outdoor trip per year for residents & faculty
  • Teach at least 2 noon conferences per year on Wilderness Medicine Core Topics
  • Attend or teach lectures on each of the 10 1-hour Wilderness Medicine Core Topics

Wilderness Medicine Ten Core Topics

  • Hypothermia, frostbite, chilblains, & trench foot
  • Altitude illnesses
  • Envenomations, plants
  • Diarrhea & water treatment
  • Heat illness & lightning
  • Marine & dive medicine
  • Trauma & orthopedics
  • Travel medicine & non-GI infectious diseases
  • Special populations (women, children, chronic disease)
  • Search & rescue (theory, med control, CISD)
