American College of Surgeons Verified Trauma Center

Trauma is an event that causes critical injuries serious enough to require hospitalization. Most major trauma is caused by automobile accidents, but it can also come from industrial accidents, falls, and violence. Central Maine Healthcare is an American College of Surgeons Verified Level II Trauma Center. We offer exceptional 24-hour-a-day trauma specialists, equipped to handle medical and surgical emergencies.

CMH’s around-the-clock trauma service includes:

  • Access to specially trained trauma surgeons
  • On-call orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery for adults
  • Pharmacy services
  • CT scanning
  • Laboratory testing and blood bank services
  • Emergency trauma resuscitation team
  • Critical care nursing unit
  • Participation in the National Trauma Data Base Registry

CMHC’s affiliation with Mass General Hospital in Boston provides increased patient access to a Level I trauma center for the most severe trauma cases. Through telecommunication capabilities and trauma transfer agreements, CMHC and MGH facilitate fast identification of patients with very severe injuries and expedite transfers, if needed.
