An echocardiogram – also known as a cardiac echo – is a painless diagnostic test that allows doctors to get a comprehensive and detailed look at how your heart is functioning. During the procedure, the patient rests comfortably while a technician places an ultrasound probe in different places on the chest, back and upper abdomen. The ultrasound provides a series of images that allow evaluation of the heart muscle, arteries, valves and heart chambers. This information is vital in detecting numerous cardiac issues. The procedure may take between 30 - 60 minutes.
Patients who are having stress tests receive an echocardiogram before and after an exercise treadmill test.
