Infusion services encompass the delivery of medication through a needle or a catheter directly into the bloodstream.
Although infusion services are usually given intravenously, some are administered through intramuscular injections or through an injection into an area near the spinal cord. Some patients have surgically placed ports that make intravenous medication easier and safer to deliver.
Infusion services may be used for people with cancer, gastrointestinal diseases, heart conditions, blood disorders, immune system disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Lyme disease, serious infections, and other conditions. People who have experienced dehydration also may receive fluid intravenously, as it works much quickly to restore hydration.
Infusion treatment is also used in pain management, allowing patients manage their dosage with an infusion pump.
Infustion services at Rumford Hospital are available Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 207-369-1130.
