Body mass index (BMI) is a calculation of height and weight that is an indirect measurement of the percentage of fat in the body. It’s a more helpful measurement than pounds alone.
Calculate Your BMI
A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered to be in the healthy range. A BMI of 25-29.9 puts a person in the overweight category. A BMI over 30 is considered early, or stage I, obesity. Health issues, such as heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, can arise from being overweight or obese, which means that these conditions should be addressed.
To qualify for one of Central Maine Healthcare’s weight loss-surgery options, you must have a BMI over 40, which indicates morbid, obesity (or, a BMI of 35 and above if a person has two medical conditions related to their obesity, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or type 2 diabetes).
