The journey to a healthier you starts with the Central Maine Healthcare Bariatric Surgery Program. Our surgeons specialize in a variety of life-changing weight loss surgery options, including gastric bypass surgery, also called roux-en-Y. They usually perform the procedure laparoscopically, which means you may be home in as little as 24 to 48 hours.
We’ll provide in-depth information on each procedure, answer questions and see if weight loss surgery is right for you. It’s a great chance to meet the team, ask questions and see if gastric bypass or another option can help you find success.
About Gastric Bypass
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a procedure that both restricts the amount of food that can be eaten and limits the amount of calories and nutrients (fat/protein/carbohydrates) your body absorbs. This helps you lose weight.
During the procedure, the surgeon creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach to restrict the amount of food you can eat, which leaves you with the sensation of feeling full. Next, the pouch is connected to a section of the small intestine, which allows food to bypass the lower stomach and the first two parts of the small intestine.
- Over 80% of people with type 2 diabetes experience remission; also highly effective at relieving or eliminating hypertension and other serious obesity-related conditions
- Possible nutrition and vitamin deficiency
- Dumping syndrome (nausea, vomiting, sweating, abdominal pain, diarrhea) may occur from consuming highly concentrated sweets
You should discuss all potential benefits and risks with your surgeon while deciding on the procedure that is right for you.
