Cheryl’s story

Years ago, when Cheryl was sick with cold symptoms that wouldn’t go away, she wasn’t sure where to turn, so she called CMMC primary care. She was quickly seen by a local practice and received care from Dr. Michael Stadnicki.

“My husband and I are both patients of Dr. Stadnicki now, and we truly feel at home in this practice,” says Cheryl. “Our appointments never feel rushed, and our input is always valued. We are comforted by the fact that he has taken time over the years to get to know us. He treats each of us like a whole person. Dr. Stadnicki and the practice is well-connected to the specialists at Central Maine Medical Center, which gives us peace of mind for any medical issues we may face in the future.”

Kyle’s story

“I have two little girls at home, don’t let me die.” Those are the words Kyle Secor remembers saying to doctors at Central Maine Medical Center (CMMC) just before he lost consciousness and began a long journey he never imagined taking.

Kyle was injured in October 2023, the victim of a shooting rampage that killed 18 people. His severe injuries would require multiple surgeries and months of rehabilitation. Kyle spent six weeks in the hospital and endured 13 surgeries, during which time he and the hospital staff became close. When Kyle left to go home, CMMC staff lined the halls to wish him well. Kyle’s sister called it a “most glorious farewell.”

“It was emotional. Very, very emotional. Like, I mean, those people have been there for the six weeks I’ve been. And, I mean, I made a family,” Kyle said. “The nursing staff and the doctors have been absolutely amazing. I couldn’t be more thankful for what they’ve done.”“What a sight it was to see this brave patient leaving our hospital,” said Steve Littleson, Central Maine Healthcare president and chief executive officer. “He has been with us for six weeks, and in that time our doctors, nurses and other team members have formed a powerful bond with him. We wish him and his wonderful family all the best as he continues his recovery at home.”

Baby Lena’s Story

Within minutes of their daughter arriving, it was clear that the baby was in distress. She was quickly whisked away to the NICU at CMMC due to complications from fluid in her lungs. Ben and Kim stayed with their little one while she received care in the NICU for a week. Family members watched their older son. The baby recovered and the family was able to head home together.

Ben and Kim are grateful for all of the doctors and nurses who cared for their daughter with compassion and provided them comfort during a stressful time. Today, their baby girl is thriving, and she and her older brother are seen regularly at Central Maine Pediatrics.

Ralph’s story

Ralph and his wife were driving home on a January day when he began sweating profusely and felt sick to his stomach. Ralph sped up and crossed into the opposite lane. “Debbie started to holler for me to slow down and that was the last thing I heard before passing out,” Ralph says. “When I came to, the car had gone off the road and slammed into a ditch.” Ralph had suffered a massive heart attack.

While Debbie wasn’t badly hurt, Ralph was rushed to CMMC where he received the diagnosis and began treatment. Ralph now spends three days a week at the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute (CMHVI) for rehabilitation. It’s a lot of time and effort, but he feels he’s lucky to be there. His provider said if he hadn’t been in the accident, it’s likely he would have died in his sleep that night.

“So here I am, and I’m doing really well,” Ralph says. “I work with the Cardiovascular Rehabilitation team three times a week and they’ve been great. Debbie and I are eating a lot healthier and exercising. I’m doing seven or eight miles between the treadmill and the stationary bike, which is great, considering that three months ago I couldn’t even take two steps.”

Lisa B’s Story

“If it weren’t for Dr. DeFrance and his team, I wouldn’t be where I am today. It was clear that they heard me and understood the challenges I was facing. I have a new outlook on life!”

A dedicated athlete when she was younger, Lisa had 14 surgeries on her knees, which left her with a very poor quality of life. She was determined to find someone who would listen to her and acknowledge her suffering.

“I couldn’t ride a bike with my kids,” says Lisa. “I couldn’t mow the lawn or rake leaves. I’d seen several doctors, and it was frustrating. They all told me I’m too young for a knee replacement and cortisone shots stopped working. The pain was excruciating.”

Then Lisa met Michael DeFrance, DO, at Central Maine Healthcare Orthopedics.

“Dr. DeFrance really listened to me. I told him about all of the previous surgeries and the pain. He suggested a double knee replacement, and I trusted him completely to make things better for my mobility and, truthfully, my life.”

After successful surgery, Lisa continued to make progress. She worked with Len Farinas, a physical therapist at Central Maine Therapy Services, conveniently located next door to Central Maine Healthcare Orthopedics.

“Lisa will tell you how often she celebrates the gains she’s making during physical therapy,” Len says. “She’s exuberant, and it’s contagious joy. She lets everyone in the gym know how excited she is.”

With a new bounce in her step, Lisa is back to being the active person she once was, with absolutely no restrictions on her activity.

“I now play with my grandkids,” says Lisa. “I go out and walk all the time. At work, people walk fast to catch up to me.”

“One Lewiston” effort to collect 1025 units of blood continues

October 18, 2024 by Jim Cyr

Commemerative Blood drive that started last week is ongoing through Red Cross’ “Sleeves Up” virtual campaign

LEWISTON, Maine (Oct. 18, 2024) Turnout was strong for the first commemorative “One Lewiston” blood drive at Central Maine Medical Center (CMMC), and the opportunity to donate continues through Oct. 25, 2024.

The onsite blood drive, which took place on two days this week, was a joint effort among the American Red Cross of Northern New England, LifeFlight of Maine and CMMC. It was organized to honor those who were impacted by the mass shootings in Lewiston on Oct. 25, 2023.

All available donor slots were filled for both days of the blood drive, but the effort is ongoing through an American Red Cross “Sleeves Up” virtual blood drive. People can donate from anywhere using this link: ARC | SleevesUp (redcrossblood.org)and assigning their donation to the “One Lewiston” blood drive.

The goal of the onsite and virtual campaign is to collect a total of 1025 units of blood, a number that is symbolic of 10.25, the date of the tragedy in Lewiston.

“It’s important that people realize they can still participate in this blood drive by donating via the “Sleeves Up” campaign,” said Steve Littleson, president and CEO, Central Maine Healthcare, who donated his own blood during last week’s drive. “The response from our team members and our community has been incredibly heartwarming, and we want to keep that momentum going to help ensure we have enough blood on hand to care for our community.”

On the evening of the tragedy, Central Maine Healthcare (CMH) quickly assembled a large team of surgeons who have expertise in orthopedics, cardiovascular, thoracic, colorectal, urologic, plastic and general surgery. They were aided by more than 100 nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other CMH healthcare professionals, all of whom have had extensive training in mass casualty incidents. They relied heavily on the blood supply CMMC had on hand at the time, and also on donations from other hospitals in the region. For those unable to donate blood, giving to Central Maine Healthcare’s Compassionate Care Fund is another way to help support trauma response and support services in central Maine.
