Bridgton Hospital helps local students protect against seasonal flu with free clinic

October 9, 2024 by Jim Cyr

BRIDGTON, Maine (Oct. 9, 2024) Dozens of students lined up, rolled up their sleeves and received their annual flu shots at Bridgton Academy on Oct. 9.

The free flu shot clinic was organized by Bridgton Hospital which is part of Central Maine Healthcare. In addition to their public outreach efforts, the healthcare system is currently in the process of getting all of it its own team members vaccinated against influenza, which is required for all healthcare workers in Maine.

“It was so great to meet with these students and help protect them against influenza,” said Elaine Drew, RN, Bridgton Hospital. “Many thanks to the great staff at Bridgton Academy for helping us make this possible.

“This is a great time for everyone to get immunized, because we are heading into the beginning of flu season.”

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends everyone who is six months or older to receive the flu vaccine.

Central Maine Healthcare honors its advanced practice providers

September 19, 2024 by Jim Cyr

LEWISTON, Maine (Sept. 19, 2024) During the last week of September, Central Maine Healthcare (CMH) will join the rest of the nation in honoring its advanced practice providers (APPs).

An APP is a health care provider who is not a physician but performs medical procedures typically performed by a physician, having undergone extensive medical education and training. Among their ranks are nurse practitioners, physician assistants, certified nurse midwives, certified registered nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists and certified anesthesiologist assistants.

“As we expand healthcare access in the communities we serve, advanced practice providers are playing an increasingly critical role,” said Steve Littleson, president and CEO, Central Maine Healthcare. “The skill set these healthcare professionals provide enables our patients to receive quality and timely care, and at the same time allows our physicians to concentrate on more complex cases. I believe APPs will play an increasingly important role in our healthcare system in the years to come.”

With the U.S. experiencing a physician shortage, our APPs have become even more critical to our ability to successfully care for our patients.

“I chose to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist because I wanted to expand my clinical knowledge,” said Tina Moring, lead certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) at Central Maine Medical Center (CMMC). “I was already committed to our patients, but I wanted to do more. Being a CRNA allows me to serve our community, to meet more of the needs of our patients, and I get to do what I love, every day.”

“I was previously working as an athletic trainer with a semi-pro basketball team,” said Angela Michalka, a physician assistant (PA) at CMH Orthopedics. “Though I was an important part of the team, I wanted to be able to do more and provide more advanced care for the players instead of having to hand them off when they had a more significant injury. As a PA I am now able to provide advanced comprehensive care for my patients and I hope I am able to help keep them active and doing the things they enjoy.”

Emergency Messaging

Telehealth Services

Central Maine Healthcare now offers telehealth services, bringing you the care you need when you’re unable to leave home. Online and telephone visits are available at most of our outpatient locations.

What is Telehealth?

Telehealth is a service provided to connect you with your healthcare provider virtually, without having to leave the comfort of your home. Telehealth includes phone appointments and video appointments with your provider using technology such as a smartphone, computer or tablet. Depending on your needs and the purpose of your intended visit, you are able to speak your provider about medical conditions and concerns, receive a diagnosis and request prescriptions. To find out if a telehealth visit is right for you, contact the Patient Service Representative at one of our outpatient practices. We can discuss your options with you and schedule the visit.

Telephone Visits

Telephone visits are now available in all CMH primary care and specialty care practices, so you can conduct your healthcare visit by phone from the comfort of your home. Available for both current and new CMH patients, these appointments are scheduled by calling your practice of choice and requesting the appointment. Phone visits are the same cost as an office visit and are covered by all in-network insurance providers.

Patient Information: Central Maine Healthcare’s Plastic Surgery Department wants to keep you informed every step of the way. Below, we’ve compiled a list of useful information as a starting point. If you have any additional questions, please contact us at 207-795-6543.

Appointments: We kindly ask that each patient be on time for their scheduled appointment.

Cancellations: If you cannot make your scheduled appointment, please call at least 24 hours before to cancel and reschedule.  This allows us to adjust our care provider’s schedule and allow access to others who may have been anticipating an appointment. If you must cancel on the day of the appointment because of an emergency, please call our office as soon as possible. Failure to notify us of a cancellation of your appointment is considered a missed appointment. Repeat missed appointments will result in discharge from the practice.

Payment for Services: Payment and/or co-pay is expected at the time of service. If applicable, we will submit your bill to your insurer. Please bring your insurance card to every appointment. If an insurance claim is submitted, you will receive a bill indicating the balance due from you after the claim is processed. Please be sure to immediately notify the Patient Financial Services office of any insurance change by calling 207-795-2237.

Prescriptions: Prescription refill requests must be placed Monday – Thursday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and Friday between 8 a.m. and noon. When possible, please call the office when you have one week of medication left. Otherwise, please contact the office and allow at least two business days for the nurse and the care provider to process the request. The office will contact you only if there are questions about your request.

After Hours Calls: If your medical need is urgent and cannot wait until the office opens, patients may reach the on-call care provider by calling 207-795-6543. The answering service will page the provider and have them return your call. Please unblock your phone line to allow the physician to call you back. The on-call care provider will not take non-urgent after hour calls regarding refills or appointments.

Release of Information to A Spouse or Family Member: Patient confidentiality laws require you to sign a release before your care provider can talk with your spouse, family member or anyone else about your care. If you would like to have such a release sent to you, please contact us.

Medical Records: A signed authorization release is required for the release of any medical records. We do whatever is necessary to ensure the privacy of our patients. If you are transferring from another provider’s office, please have your medical records forwarded to our office. We reserve the right to charge a fee for copying of medical records.

Patient Satisfaction & Policy Regarding Cosmetic Revision: Our goal is your satisfaction. Plastic and cosmetic surgery is an art based in science. Perfection, while always the goal, is rarely achieved. We strive for the best outcomes possible, but occasionally dissatisfaction occurs. While working with you, your surgeon may recommend a revision to help achieve your ultimate goal for the procedure. Depending on the circumstances, the revision may be done at an additional cost to you. In rare cases, your surgeon may offer you a reduced or no cost revision within six months of your procedure.
