Breastfeeding Support

Central Maine Healthcare is committed to helping new moms breastfeed, for those who have chosen that method of feeding their babies. Our team has several lactation consultants who are available to help you learn, troubleshoot, and to lend a listening ear if you get frustrated.

We also offer free breastfeeding classes and have a breastfeeding support group that meets regularly.

Your Certified Lactation Consultants

Our lactation consultants are certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLE) and are also registered nurses. They are well-trained to handle the basics of breastfeeding as well as the more challenging situations. You have access to them via a consultation prior to your delivery, during your stay, and after you go home. The lactation consultants work closely with the nurses in labor delivery and in the NICU to ensure a positive breastfeeding experience for you and your baby. They are available to help at all three of our hospitals.

The Benefits of Breastfeeding

Many health specialists besides the World Health Organization and the United Nations’ Children’s Fund advise mothers to breastfeed, when possible. For example, the American Academy of Pediatrics advocates breastfeeding, as does the U.S. Surgeon General, who recommends exclusive breastfeeding babies for the first six months of life and beyond the first year. Many healthcare experts believe that it’s optimal to breastfeed for 12 months or longer, depending on you and your baby’s needs.

The benefits to your baby include:

  • When it comes to nutrition, breast milk is the ultimate food for your baby. As your baby grows, your breast milk also changes to adapt to the baby’s nutritional needs.
  • Breast milk enhances the baby’s immune system and promotes wellness – it helps prevent illnesses including intestinal tract infections, ear infections, allergies, skin conditions, and respiratory infections. It also reduces the risk of more serious illnesses, such as childhood cancer, meningitis, juvenile diabetes, and other acute chronic diseases.
  • Studies indicate that breastfeeding greatly reduces the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).
  • Breastfeeding enhances a baby’s physical development, from encouraging the development of straighter teeth to helping brain development.

The benefits for you include:

  • Breastfeeding allows you to respond quickly to your baby’s need for nourishment. It is convenient, and it is free!
  • Breastfeeding has many physical benefits for a new mother. The long-term benefits to mothers who breastfeed have reduced risk of breast, ovarian, cervical, and endometrial cancers. They also have less chance of osteoporosis.
  • Breastfeeding also enhances your everyday health, by reducing your risk of anemia. It also helps you metabolically: moms who breastfeed return to their pre-pregnancy weight faster.
  • While breastfeeding, you have a great opportunity to bond with your child, and to enhance your emotional relationship.

Neurology

Neurology, simply put, is the branch of medicine that treats disorders of the nervous system. That encompasses the brain, brain stem, nerves and spinal cord. The largest part of the field is the central nervous system, where we find control of our most basic behaviors—movements, speech, understanding and balance.

Central Maine Neurology

Central Maine’s Department of Neurology treats adults for disorders such as stroke, epilepsy, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, movement disorders such as Parkinson’s, dementia, cognitive disorders and more. If it’s a disorder of your brain or spinal cord, we treat it in Neurology.

Our neurologists and other doctors are specialists in epilepsy, movement disorders and other neurological disorders. Not all of the illnesses we treat are unusual or extreme; if you’re experiencing headaches or lower back pain, we will evaluate you to be sure you have an accurate diagnosis and a solid treatment plan. If your condition is more serious, such as multiple sclerosis or head and neck cancer, we have the expertise to treat those illnesses, too.

Neurology will closely coordinate your treatment, working side by side with physical therapists, speech therapists and other clinicians to make sure your personalized treatment plan is perfectly suited to your condition and preferences.

Neurosciences

If you have a neurological disorder, we can help.

Symptoms of neurological disorders aren’t easy to navigate, but we’re here to help. Our board-certified neuroscience team is trained to diagnose and treat the full range of diseases linked to the brain, spine, muscles and nerves.

We treat the full range of neurological conditions ranging from movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease to chronic back pain and stroke. We’re proud that our efforts to prevent and treat stroke rapidly have resulted in certification as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission.

Among the reasons we are certified is the comprehensive and holistic nature of our care. In addition to a partnership with MGH and full suite of technology, we have a team including neurologists, orthopedic surgeons and specialists from other related fields. Specialized nursing care, physical and occupational therapy, social work and other vitally important supportive services are also key components of our world-class neuroscience services.

Healing Environment Inspired Design

The Cancer Care Center was thoughtfully designed to incorporate the landscape in and around Lewiston. Local mills and factories, features of the region’s proud heritage, played a crucial part in the design concept. The interior architecture and layout was inspired by the work and research being conducted in DNA research and how it relates to cancer care. Using natural light, sustainable features, growing plants and open space to allow for the best possible healing environment.

Linear Accelerators and Radiation Therapy
This center has two state-of-the-art Varian TrueBeam Linear Accelerators for the radiation oncology department. A medical linear accelerator (LINAC) is the device most commonly used for radiation treatments for patients with cancer. It delivers high-energy x-rays or electrons to the region of the patient’s tumor. Using this advanced technology, these treatments can be delivered in such a way that they destroy the cancer cells while sparing the surrounding normal tissue.

More than half of U.S. cancer patients receive radiation therapy — and many of these treatments wouldn’t be possible without a machine called a linear accelerator (LINAC). A linear accelerator, also referred to as LINAC, is a machine that aims radiation at cancer tumors with pinpoint accuracy, sparing nearby healthy tissue. It’s used to deliver several types of external beam radiation therapy.

LINACs send radiation, such as x-rays or electron beams, through the body and into cancer tumors. Today’s LINACs are equipped with 3D image guidance like CT scanning to accurately target tumors. Special software then matches radiation beams to unique tumor sizes and shapes. This customized approach makes external beam radiation therapy safe and precise for cancer treatment.

Infusion Suites
Our infusion suites are designed to provide the most comfortable and calming setting for our patients who are undergoing chemotherapy treatment. The Suites are designed with natural light, private entertainment screens, comfortable seating and, most importantly, the dedicated attention of our nursing team with a large nursing station located within the same room.

Onsite Lab
Patients can conveniently access any of the variety of laboratory tests are needed for navigating cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment. Lab tests also may be used to screen high-risk patients, pinpoint the stage of cancer, identify treatment options and evaluate whether the cancer is responding to treatment.

Onsite Pharmacy
The pharmacy team at the Cancer Care Center understands that cancer is a complex disease, and that oncology medications play a key role in fighting it. Our onsite oncology pharmacy provides quality care in several ways and CMMC Cancer Center pharmacists guide patients through the process to educate patients and their caregiver, helping them understand medications and manage side effects.

What is Telehealth?

Telehealth is a service provided to connect you with your healthcare provider virtually, without having to leave the comfort of your home. Telehealth includes phone appointments and video appointments with your provider using technology such as a smartphone, computer or tablet. Depending on your needs and the purpose of your intended visit, you are able to speak your provider about medical conditions and concerns, receive a diagnosis and request prescriptions. To find out if a telehealth visit is right for you, contact the Patient Service Representative at one of our outpatient practices. We can discuss your options with you and schedule the visit.

Telephone Visits

Telephone visits are now available in all CMH primary care and specialty care practices, so you can conduct your healthcare visit by phone from the comfort of your home. Available for both current and new CMH patients, these appointments are scheduled by calling your practice of choice and requesting the appointment. Phone visits are the same cost as an office visit and are covered by all in-network insurance providers.
