Central Maine Healthcare (CMH) physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals continue to treat victims of the Oct. 25 mass shooting attack in Lewiston.
Nearly all of the victims who initially survived the attack were brought to Central Maine Medical Center (CMMC) in Lewiston.
The first patient arrived at 7:24 p.m. Within an hour, a total of 14 patients were transported to CMMC. Of those, eight were admitted, three died after arriving at the hospital. Two patients were discharged. One patient was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Separately, one patient was taken from the scene to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Lewiston.
Of the eight who were admitted, three remain in critical condition and one is stable. One patient was transferred to Mass General on Thursday. Another patient was discharged yesterday and two more are expected to be discharged today.
Central Maine Medical Center is a level three trauma center, staffed around the clock with trained trauma, vascular, orthopedic and other specialty surgeons, anesthesiologists, and emergency professionals trained to handle crisis situations.
“Our team provided high-level expertise. They train regularly for this type of situation, and I think it showed,” John Alexander, MD, chief medical officer, said in remarks Thursday.
“Words cannot describe our collective sense of loss,” said Steve Littleson, president and CEO, Central Maine Healthcare. “I want to acknowledge the absolutely heroic efforts of our entire CMH team who responded and provided expert and compassionate care during the most challenging event in our history.”
Security at CMMC’s Lewiston campus has been heightened significantly, and regular operations at the hospital will continue on Oct. 27, as we continue to provide care for the shooting victims and our other patients.
Central Maine Healthcare’s off-campus practices in Lewiston and Auburn will remain closed while the area remains under a shelter-in-place order.
