Volunteer FAQ’s

Want to become a volunteer but not sure what steps to take or how many hours you need to commit to every week or month. Review the FAQ’s below and if you have further questions or would like to speak to us about becoming a CMH volunteer please contact us.

Volunteer FAQs

How do I become a volunteer?

  • Visit, Call, or Email The Central Maine Healthcare Volunteer Office for an application
  • Complete the Volunteer Application & return to the volunteer office
  • You will be called to schedule an interview with one of our team members

What is required of me to become a hospital volunteer?

When you attend your interview, you will be asked to sign confidentiality forms and will give us permission to do a reference and background check.  You will also have to make an appointment at our wellness center for a medical review and pertinent testing to volunteer in the hospital.  All information about the process and orientation schedules will be discussed in your interview.

If I am interested in a specific area of the hospital, what chances do I have to get the assignment I want?

We will make our best effort to place you in the area you desire, but we are unable to guarantee a specific assignment. We will discuss availability of any assignment during your interview and make the best match for your past skills and experience.

Once I interview, how long would it take to officially start?

The process is different for everyone. Typically, the application process can take from two weeks to a month depending on the volunteer area you are assigned and clearance of your background checks.

If I would like to volunteer for one day, what is the application process?  Do you offer group volunteering?

We are unable to accommodate group volunteering or individual volunteering opportunities for one day because we require criminal and medical background screening.

Can I volunteer once a month or every other week?

The time frames of volunteering differ depending on the department or unit you are placed in.  Most of our volunteer programs require you to come in once a week, every week on a regular schedule (same day/same time every week).  Our minimum time commitment is 4 hours per week for a time period of four months.

Can I volunteer in two or three different volunteer duties?

At the beginning, we recommend getting to know the hospital and becoming familiar with the culture of Central Maine Healthcare. This is essential to helping patients and families. Therefore, only one assignment is suggested per volunteer. After you have completed the minimum service time requirement for an assignment, you can schedule a meeting with the volunteer services team member to discuss the possibility of adding or changing your assignment.

Do I have to stop volunteering once I complete four months?

Absolutely not!  We are pleased to have volunteers that have given service to Central Maine Healthcare for many years. Once you complete your minimum service time requirement, you are welcome to continue volunteering for as long as you desire. You can also apply for a different assignment by scheduling a meeting with one of our volunteer services team members.

I have a 15-year-old who would like to volunteer. Is he eligible to be a volunteer?

We offer a Junior Volunteer Program for youth that are ages 14 to 17 years old.  We offer summer and year-round opportunities.
