The study involved retrospective chart review of 49 newborn nursery patients of at least 35 weeks gestational age tested at birth for opioid exposure through urine, meconium or cord blood toxicology before and after transition to the ESC model. Neonates who had confirmed exposure to opioids in utero by a neonatal urine toxicology screen, meconium toxicology screen, or umbilical cord toxicology screen and/ or neonates whose mother tested positive for opioids during their pregnancy or at time of delivery were assessed with the m-FNASS protocol if born between November 2017-November 2018 and ESC protocol if born between December 2018-December 2019. Neonates receiving the m-FNASS approach or ESC were compared on a variety of dimensions (see Table 1).
