Central Maine Medical Center is one of the most well-equipped hospitals in Maine, and you’ll also enjoy the best care that our compassionate team offers. Our Special Delivery Family Birthing Center offers excellent pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum care in a home-like environment.
What Sets Us Apart
Baby-Friendly birthing center: This special certification means we go the extra step to make the birthing experience special for the mother, the father or her birthing partner (or coach), and her new baby (or babies!). Our goal is to promote and support breastfeeding, and we do that by providing optimal care, information, instruction, and support.
Private and comfortable birthing rooms: We include amenities such as labor tubs, which help ease mom through her labor. We have television to help pass the time (including a special channel about newborns and their care). We encourage the mom’s partner, coach or another family member to stay overnight if they like. Their meals are free!
Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit (NICU): You’ll rest easy knowing that if your baby needs extra help, expert and attentive help is available in the same hospital where you give birth. We’re one of only three hospitals in Maine with our own NICU.
Caring team: The Special Delivery team believes that the most rewarding birth experiences are enjoyed by families who are physically, emotionally, and educationally prepared. Doctors and midwives at CMMC work closely with nurses and childbirth educators to create educational programs to help new parents understand pregnancy, labor and birth, and caring for a new baby.
Our “Breastfeeding Matters” program: We offer the services of lactation consultants (certified health professionals who specialize in educating and supporting breastfeeding mothers) to inpatients and outpatients. We also provide prenatal education about breastfeeding, a weekly breastfeeding support group, a phone line, newborn office visits at Central Maine Pediatrics, and breast pump rental and sales. Our lactation consultants are available by appointment Monday through Friday, reachable at 207-795-2528.
