CMMC & Swift River Residencies FAQs

Given that time during your interview day is limited, here is a list of questions and answers about our residency that we hope will provide helpful information.

Q How long has CMMC been training Family Medicine residents?
A 35 years
Q Where do your graduates practice Family Medicine?
A We have graduates practicing from northern Maine to southern California - even as far away as Norway and New Zealand.
Q What exposure would I get to the principles of the Patient Centered Medical Home if I train at CMMC?
A EMR, Advanced Access, Group Medical Visits, Med-Psych Clinic (on-site comprehensive psychiatric assessment and treatment), Clinical Teams, Care Manager, Social Worker, Disease Registries.
Q What are some highlights of your Family Medicine Center, where I would see my continuity patients?
A Clinical Teams (including nursing and front office reps), Social Worker and Care Manager, highly skilled long term Community Preceptors, diverse population including refugee families.
Q I hear you have a Rural Track located in Rumford. How is that different from the CMMC-Lewiston program?
A Rural Track residents receive a housing stipend, a stipend for travel between Rumford and Lewiston, take calls from home, have more longitudinal curriculum, work in a Critical Access Hospital, work in a Rural Health Center and operate under an apprenticeship model 1:1 faculty to resident ratio.
Q What would my osteopathic education look like if I am a D.O.?
A 3 full time Osteopathic Faculty, 5 Community Osteopathic Preceptors, OMT clinics, integrated OMM care into your family medicine clinic appointment schedule.
Q Do you have any focus on Resident Wellness as part of your residency program?
A Yes, we have a yearly Wellness Week that includes exercise, nutrition and relaxation activities along with a "steps" team competition.  We also offer each resident a free Health and Fitness Center access that includes most of the classes and great hours (5 AM -9 PM most days). There are 5th Tuesdays (4 afternoons a year that are planned by chief residents for the resident and medical student group - fun activity that has a team-building goal) and day-long retreats twice a year for residents.
Q What are the academic strengths that will benefit me if I train at CMMC?
A Daily case-based inpatient morning report, outpatient FM daily Team Huddles, Blocked didactics every Tues afternoon - Resident specific Tuesdays (PGY I-Beh Science; PGY II-Research; PGY III-Health Systems Mgmt); FM residents are first responders to Codes; WALS course for WIMP residents, as well as all other major certifications (PALS,ALSO and BLS).
Q What would CMMC FMR offer to me as perks or value-added benefits?
A $15,000 loan repayment over the 3 years of training, full benefits package, complimentary Health and Fitness Center visits including most classes, food stipends when on call, free parking.
Q What is orientation like for new interns?
A Orientation is a month-long experience that includes Continuity Clinic in the FMC; Community Health/Medicine; Orientation to the inpatient and outpatient EMR, orientation to the Hospital and the Lewiston-Auburn area; call done with a senior resident; BLS, ACLS and NRP courses with certification; meetings with the Program Director and your Academic Faculty Advocate; a series of new intern noontime didactics and an extensive introduction to competencies and your first rotation.
Q Can you tell me about the patients and families I would care for in the CMMC Family Medicine Center?
A We have a diverse FMC population - urban issues, rural issues, cultural diversity including refugee families, issues of the underserved. The patients provide a great exposure to a wide variety of issues to help you gain competence.
Q What kinds of connections can I expect to make with the L-A community as a resident?
A You will work in the Dempsey Challenge medical tent, United Way Agency fair, Community Service Day as part of intern orientation, a longitudinal 48-hour community project over the PGY II/III years and give talks in local schools.
Q Can you tell me about the academic appointments and scholarly activities of the CMMC FMR faculty?
A Our faculty hold academic appointments at Boston University and the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and soon will be appointed by the University of Vermont as Clinical Assistant or Associate Professors of Family Medicine.  Our faculty and residents regularly present at regional and national Family Medicine Conferences. Peer reviewed publications and presentations are listed on our website.
Q Will I get to interact with and teach medical students?
A Yes. We have 8 MSIIIs from UNECOM that complete their entire clerkship year in Lewiston. We also have FM clerkship students from Boston University, Tufts, and the University of Vermont. These students will work with you on inpatient and outpatient teams and you will have multiple opportunities to teach and guide their professional development.
Q What is a WIMP?
A The Wilderness and International Medicine Program is a special opportunity available to all residents at CMMC (including the Rural Track). Ask more about this during your interview day if you are interested.
Q I have some special interests in Family Medicine - will I be able to tailor my education to assure that I gain competency in those areas?

Yes. We work very hard to individualize the education plan to meet each learner's needs and desires. We have Selectives (an intensive education in a particular area that can include but is not limited to Children/Adolescent Care, Emergency Medicine, Geriatrics/Palliative Care, Inpatient FM Hospitalist, Integrative Medicine (formerly known as CAM), International Health, Maternity Care, Reproductive Health and Wilderness Medicine). We also have ample elective time during which you and your Academic Faculty Advocate can map out a plan to achieve your educational goals.


Top Ten FAQ's about the Swift River Rural Track Program


Q Are there separate NRMP match numbers for the two locations?
A YES! The number for Lewiston is 2327120C0 and the number for Rumford is 2327120C1
Q What will the call frequency be?
A The frequency will be 1:6 PGY2 and 1:8 PGY3. This is a frequent but not very busy call (to allow residents the maximum opportunity to obtain experience in admitting pediatric patients and to be involved in as many deliveries as possible). A couple of rotations calls will be at CMMC. There will be some rotations when you will not be scheduled for call.
Q Will call be in-house or from home?
A In-house call for the beginning of PGYII. Pending faculty review of each resident, call will then be from home if location permits .
Q What is the financial incentive package?
A $300 per month housing stipend (PGY 2 and 3), mileage (Rumford-Lewiston), membership in National Rural Health Association (NRHA), stipend to attend one NRHA national meeting, paid membership at Rumford Hospital Wellness Center, season pass to Black Mountain ski area, $500 moving allowance (Lewiston-Rumford) (in addition, all PGY1 residents receive a moving allowance to move to Lewiston), and housing while on rotations in Lewiston during PGY 2 & 3.  All other benefits received by Lewiston residents will be provided to RT residents.  Call room will be provided at Rumford Hospital (for times requiring resident presence).
Q Where will I see my continuity patients?
A During PGY1, rural residents will see outpatients in Lewiston. PGY1 is mainly an inpatient year and there is limited outpatient clinic time for all first-year resident with the exception of the Outpatient Family Medicine - Teaching block. Starting at the beginning of PGY2, residents will see their own continuity patients at Swift River in Rumford. Residents will also follow their continuity patients as an inpatient, on Labor and Delivery, at some sub-specialty clinics and one of two local nursing homes as well as during home visits.
Q Who will be your preceptors?
A Precepting duties will be shared among the Rural Track Faculty (including the rural rrack Site Coordinator based at Swift River Family Medicine along with three rural track faculty who practice in a family medicine center in close proximity to Rumford) and the Lewiston-based faculty. Occasionally a community-based non-faculty preceptor who has completed preceptor training may be utilized. The full range of preceptors will allow residents to gain knowledge and skills in all areas of Family Medicine.
Q Will I learn procedures?
A As with many rural practices, Swift River performs many in-office procedures, including skin lesions & suturing, fracture management, colposcopies, and OB ultrasounds. Given the small size and personal nature of the program, residents will also have the opportunity to be involved in many of the procedures performed at the hospital.
Q What type of Obstetrical training can I expect?
A The Lewiston program is currently developing a "Maternity Care Path or Emphasis." Rural track residents will automatically be enrolled in this path/emphasis which will include three months of Maternity Care in Lewiston and an away-elective in high volume/high risk obstetrics. In addition, Swift River currently has 80 deliveries a year shared by the FP's and an Ob-Gyn, all of whom practice in the same office. Rural track residents should have sufficient obstetrical experience to gain privileges for routine obstetrical care upon graduation.
Q How will subspecialty rotations happen?
A There are many subspecialty clinics that take place onsite at Rumford Hospital, including Cardiology, Orthopedics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitations, Hematology/Oncology, Podiatry, and Audiology. Rotations in these areas will take place longitudinally over the two years (i.e. instead of a month on cardiology or ortho, you may spend one half day twice a month for six months in the cardiology clinic, where you will also see your referred continuity patients with the cardiologist/orthopedist). Other specialty rotations will take place in Lewiston (ICU, Maternity Care, Dermatology, Inpatient Pediatrics). Continuity clinic responsibilities will vary according to the rotation in order to provide the maximum continuity for the resident (and patients) but to allow for educational time in different locations with the minimum of commuting.
Q Can I transfer from the Lewiston program to the Rumford program or vice versa?
A The possibility of transferring between programs will be considered only if there are open spots in either program (or in rare  circumstances). This is necessary due to budget and staffing issues.
